Overview

Five days through remote Zanskar

This five-day journey from Leh combines historic monasteries, traditional villages, dramatic Himalayan roads, glacier landscapes, and a memorable trek to Phugtal Monastery. Travel through Lamayuru, Alchi, Kargil, Rangdum, and Padum before entering the remote Tsarap Valley and returning to Leh along the spectacular Nimmu–Chilling route.

Drive approximately 6–7 hours
Leh to Lamayuru, Alchi and Kargil

Begin the journey from Leh and drive west along the Srinagar–Leh Highway. Visit Lamayuru Monastery, one of Ladakh’s most historic monasteries, surrounded by the extraordinary Moonland landscape. Continue to Alchi Monastery, renowned for its ancient murals, Buddhist artwork, and intricate wood carvings. Travel through picturesque villages before arriving in Kargil. Overnight in a hotel in Kargil.

Drive approximately 8–9 hours
Kargil to Padum via Rangdum and Pensi La

Leave Kargil and travel through the beautiful Suru Valley toward Zanskar. Stop at Rangdum Monastery before continuing toward the impressive Drang-Drung Glacier. Cross Pensi La, the traditional gateway into Zanskar, and enjoy magnificent views of glaciers and surrounding peaks. Visit Zongkhul Monastery, a historic cave monastery associated with the great Buddhist yogi Naropa, before continuing to Padum. Overnight in a hotel or guesthouse in Padum.

Scenic drive and trek
Padum to Phugtal Monastery

Drive from Padum toward the trailhead for Phugtal Monastery. En route, visit either Bardan Monastery or Muney Monastery, depending on time and local road conditions. Begin the scenic trek through the Tsarap Valley to Phugtal Monastery, one of the most remarkable monasteries in the Himalayas. The monastery is built around a natural cave high above the Tsarap River. Explore the monastery complex and learn about its centuries-old Buddhist heritage. Overnight at the monastery guesthouse or a nearby homestay.

Trek and scenic drive
Phugtal Monastery to Padum

After breakfast, trek back from Phugtal Monastery to the roadhead. Continue by vehicle and stop near the sacred mountain of Gombo Rangjon, one of the most distinctive natural landmarks in the Zanskar region and a mountain revered by local Buddhist communities. Return to Padum through the remote mountain landscape. Overnight in a hotel or guesthouse in Padum.

Drive approximately 9–10 hours
Padum to Leh via Nimmu and Chilling

Leave Padum and return to Leh along the scenic Nimmu–Chilling route. Travel through dramatic mountain gorges and remote valleys, following sections of the Zanskar River. The road offers extraordinary views of rugged cliffs, deep river valleys, and the high-altitude desert landscape of Ladakh. Arrive in Leh by evening, marking the end of the Zanskar cultural journey.
