Things To Be Taken Care Of!

  • People should be aware of the extreme ice conditions. The ice can be as dangerous at times due to cracks so you need to find the pathway to cross the frozen river.
  • The ice can even be slippery so it should be taken proper care of while walking.
  • The temperature is extremely cold and decreases further sometimes. This is why warm and layered clothes are recommended which would help in keeping the body warm and prevent the body from freezing.
  • Hiking shoes or gumboots are highly recommended to protect your feet from ice-cold water. It is very important to protect your fingers and toes from extreme cold.
  • You should avoid heavy meals during the trek as it leads to tiredness.

Basic Itinerary!

Day 1 - Hemis - Martselang - Shang Sumdo

Time: 4 hrs

Distance: 10.9 km

  • Pay a visit to Hemis monastery which is ought to be one of the most important and largest monasteries in Ladakh.
  • Then head to the trail of Martselang and Shang Sumdo.
  • You can easily drive from Hemis to Shang Sumdo by jeep.
Day 2 - Shang Sumdo - Lartse

Time: 6 hrs

Distance: 11.3 km

  • Cross the river with the attractive valley and gorge.
  • While on your way, you come across the village of Chogdo and beyond that is Chuskurmo.
  • Then follow the trail to Lartse.
Day 3 - Lartse - Kongmaru La - Tachungtse

Time: 7 hrs

Distance: 12 km

  • From the pass, you go downwards to Nimaling where people from Markha Valley bring their herds for grazing
  • Walk farther down to Tachungtse
Day 4 - Tachungtse - Yakrupal

Time: 6 hrs

Distance: 15.7 km

  • The trip follows the isolated Langthang valley to Yakrupal.
Day 5 - Yakrupal - Khar

Time: 8 hrs,/p>

Distance: 19.5 km

  • You have to cross the Zalung Karpo La
  • From the pass, enjoy the amazing view of Zanskar range and Changthang plateau.
  • The trip down is sharp and you have to cross the river multiple times before reaching Khar
Day 6 - Khar - Dat

Time: 5 hrs

Distance: 13.8 km

  • Continue the trip until it broadens into a valley where you reach Tangtse Sumdo
  • The left trail shows the way to the village of Dat
Day 7 -Dat - Lungmo Che

Time: 7 hrs

Distance: 19.7 km

  • Follow a broad valley that is guarded by rolling hills.
  • The route to Yar La is very easy to climb.
  • Head down from the pass to Lungmo Che.
Day 8 - Lungmo Che - Zara

Distance: 21 km

  • The trail leads to Yagang and the Kharnak where the nomads have settled
  • Then head towards Zara
Day 9 - Zara - Ponganagu

Time: 6 hrs

Distance: 16.9 km

You have to cross the Manali-Leh highway

Then follow the trail that leads to Ponganagu

Day 10 - Ponganagu - Nuruchan

Time: 6 hrs

Distance: 17.9 km

  • You can start the day walking along the bank of Tso Kar lake.
  • Then head to wild grazing land of Nuruchan.
Day 11 - Nuruchan - Gyamar Barma

Time: 8 hrs

Distance: 19.5 km

  • This route takes a long day that starts with the Horlam Kongka La
  • from here, you have to head to Rajungkaru where you will come across several places where the nomads have settled
  • Cross the Kyamayuri La pass before reaching the high elevation valley of Gyamar Barma
Day 12 - Gyamar Barma - Gyamar

Time: 3.5 hrs

Distance: 5.9 km

  • You have to cross the Kartse La and walk down to the valley of Gyamar
Day 13 - Gyamar - Korzok

Time: 6 hrs

Distance: 16.5 km

  • Move up slowly towards the Yalung Nyau La which is the highest point on this trek that gives an amazing view of Tso Moriri lake.
  • Go down to the village of Korzok on the bank of Tso Moriri.
