  • People should be aware of the extreme ice conditions. The ice can be as dangerous at times due to cracks so you need to find the pathway to cross the frozen river.
  • The ice can even be slippery so it should be taken proper care of while walking.
  • The temperature is extremely cold and decreases further sometimes. This is why warm and layered clothes are recommended which would help in keeping the body warm and prevent the body from freezing.
  • Hiking shoes or gumboots are highly recommended to protect your feet from ice-cold water. It is very important to protect your fingers and toes from extreme cold.
  • You should avoid heavy meals during the trek as it leads to tiredness.

Basic Itinerary!

Day 1 - Lamayuru - Wanla

Time: 4 hrs

Distance: 9.4 km

  • Have a visit to the famous Lamayuru gompa which is among the oldest in Ladakh
  • Follow the river and move up the Prinkti La
  • Homestay facility is available in Wanla
Day 2 - Wanla - Hinju

Time:,/b> 6.5 hrs

Distance: 17 km

  • Pass along the river bank and cross the villages in the middle of lush green barley fields
  • Homestay facility is arranged in Hinju
Day 3 - Hinju - Sumda Doksa

Time: 7 hrs

Distance: 11.6km

  • And head to the Kongskil La which gives superb views of the Karakoram and Stok ranges
  • Head down slowly to Sumda Doksa
Day 4 - Sumda Doksa - Dung Dung Chan La

Time: 7 hrs

Distance: 15.9 km

  • You have to cross few rivers before you reach Sumda Chenmo village
  • Then you head towards the Dung Dung Chan La base camp
Day 5 - Base of Dung Dung Chan La - Chilling

Time: 4 hrs

Distance: 10.5 km

  • Ascend to the Dung Dung Chan La and enjoy the lovely view from the summit
  • Pursue down to Chilling hamlet which is widely-known for its skilled silversmiths
Day 6 - Chilling - Skiu

Time: 4 hrs

Distance: 10.9 km

  • Once you have crossed the Zanskar river you will straightly lead to Markha valley

Day 7 - Skiu - Markha

Time: 7 hrs

Distance: 21.5 km

  • The trip to Markha village is followed by a river that passes through small villages which comes on the way
  • There are about 20 families who reside in this Markha village
  • Pay a visit to the old monastery and the fort

Day 8 - Markha - Hankar

Time: 5 hrs

  • You can continue proceeding along the river
  • Nearby the Umlung village, you can visit the cliff-side religious home of Techa

Day 9 - Hankar - Nimaling

  • This trip leads to the upland of Nimaling where the people of Markha valley bring their herds for grazing
  • There are chances to reach to the base of the Kang Yatse glacier which takes a few hours from Nimaling
Day 10 - Nimaling - Shang Sumdo

  • Travel across the Kongmaru La from where you can view the beauty of Kang Yatze and the Karakoram peaks
