The Baby Trek —
Ladakh without the altitude
The Sham Valley Trek is called the Baby Trek for a reason — it never goes above 3,874m, can be done at any time of year, and is genuinely suitable for families with children and first-time trekkers. But don’t let that mislead you. The Sham Valley is one of the most beautiful parts of Ladakh — ancient monasteries, traditional villages, green fields along the Indus, and real homestays with families who have been welcoming travellers for generations. This is the best way to actually experience Ladakhi life rather than just pass through it.

Good to know
This trek never goes above 3,874m — safe for most people without prior altitude experience. All nights are in village homestays. Suitable for children aged 8 and above. Can be done in any season including winter.
Drive from Leh to Likir, passing through the villages of the lower Indus Valley. Visit Likir Monastery — a 700-year-old monastery home to around 120 monks, with a giant golden Buddha statue in the courtyard. Begin trekking through open fields and small hamlets. Overnight homestay in Yangthang.
Trek through juniper forests and small villages. The trail climbs gently to the highest point of the route before descending to Hemis Shukpachan — a charming village known for its juniper trees and traditional whitewashed houses. Overnight homestay. If conditions are right, snow leopards have been spotted in the hills above this valley in winter.
Final day of trekking. Descend through open landscape to Temisgam, where a small monastery perches above the village. Car meets the group here. On the way back to Leh, visit Alchi Monastery — one of the oldest and most important in Ladakh, famous for its 11th-century murals and painted interior. Continue to Leh or end at Alchi. Trek ends.
