The captivating mountain peaks, lakes or the scenic valley are the main reasons why tourists like to visit this place. In summers, this region shows the most vibrant colors of nature. While during the winters, the mountain peaks are covered with heavy snowfall!

Basic Information About The Region

  • This unusual trek joins the Zanskar valley to the mountains of Changthang region which is home to the wanderers.
  • In the initial part of the trek, you will get the opportunity to discover the local life in remote Zanskari villages.
  • Also, you will have the chance to visit Phuktal which is one of the most captivating monasteries.
  • Following that, you will come across an isolated path leading to the Changthang region.
  • Lastly, cross countless high passes before reaching the heavenly Tso Moriri lake.

Things To Be Taken Care Of!

Here are some things people need to take care of while taking this trek as prevention is better than cure!

  • People should be aware of the extreme ice conditions. The ice can be as dangerous at times due to cracks so you need to find the pathway to cross the frozen river.
  • The ice can even be slippery so it should be taken proper care of while walking.
  • The temperature is extremely cold and decreases further sometimes. This is why warm and layered clothes are recommended which would help in keeping the body warm and prevent the body from freezing.
  • Hiking shoes or gumboots are highly recommended to protect your feet from ice-cold water. It is very important to protect your fingers and toes from extreme cold.
  • You should avoid heavy meals during the trek as it leads to tiredness.

Basic Itinerary!

Day 1 - Raru - Changpa Tsetan

Time: 6 hrs

Distance: 16.5km

  • Walk along the Tsarap river through a rough landscape
  • Travel across the river a couple of times before you reach Changa Tsetan
Day 2 - Changpa Tsetan - Phuktal

Time: 6 hrs

Distance: 15.8km

  • Walk towards the villages of Surle, Kalbok, and Zantang to the convergence of Tsarap and Kargyak river. A little ahead is the village of Purne
  • Head to Phuktal monastery, the gompa is located at the center of a gigantic cave high up in the vertical mountainside
  • Take out some time to visit the monastery
Day 3 - Phuktal - Shade

Time: 8 hrs

Distance: 21.5km

  • Follow Tsarap river up to Yata and then head to the village of Tantak
  • Enter a small valley which leads to the village of Shade, one of the most solitary villages of Zanskar
Day 4 - Raru - Changpa Tsetan

Time: 4 hrs

Distance: 9.4km

  • You can spend some quality time in Shade village
  • Then proceed to Nyalokuntse La base
Day 5 - Raru - Changpa Tsetan

Time: 7-8 Hrs

Distance: 15km

  • There is a long day through beautiful high-altitude landscapes and then ultimately you cross two passes before reaching Hormoche.
Day 6 - Hormoche - Tsatak

Time: 5 hrs

Distance: 13.9km

  • As you pass by the river, you will come across the agricultural fields which were deserted because of climate change
  • After that cross the Zara Chu river that hails from Rupshu valley and reaches the attractive village of Tsatak
Day 7 - Tsatak - Tsokmitsik

Time: 5 hrs

Distance: 15km

  • The walk to Tsokmitsik is easy
Day 8 - Tsokmitsik - Morang La - Takstago

Time: 8 hrs

Distance: 12.7km

  • Travel across the Morang La and enjoy the view of the Rupshu valley and Zanskar range from the pass
  • There is a sharp descent to Takstago
Day 9 - Takstago - Zhabuk Yokma

Time: 7 hrs

Distance: 18.3km

  • You have to climb the path for an hour which has a steep road to cross a small pass.
Day 10 - Zhabuk Yokma - Zara

Time: 8 hrs

Distance: 22km

  • Follow the line and pass through some small villages before you reach Zara.
Day 11 - Zara - Ponganagu

Time: 6 hrs

Distance: 17km

  • The line crosses the road going from Leh to Manali.
  • Carry on walking towards Ponganagu which is close to Tso Kar lake.
  • Many wild animals such as wild asses, ibex, migratory birds, and marmots consider this area as home.
Day 12 - Ponganagu - Nuruchan

Time: 6 hrs

Distance: 17.9km

  • The trail goes beside the bank of Tso Kar lake, followed by an arid landscape until Nuruchan
Day 13 - Nuruchan - Gyamar Barma

Time: 8 hrs

Distance: 19.5km

  • You will climb two passes named Horlam Kongka La which is followed by Kyamayuri La.
Day 14 - Gyamar Barma - Gyamar

Time: 4 hrs

Distance: 5.9km

  • Climb up gradually towards the Kartse La and then walk down to the Gyamar valley
Day 15 - Gyamar - Korzok

Time: 6 hrs

Distance: 15.5km

  • As you advance towards the Yalung Nyau La you encounter the highest pass on the trek with a splendid view of Tso Moriri lake.
  • Head downwards to Korzok village located on the bank of Tso Moriri.
